Cranmore Infant School B90

Science

At Cranmore Infant School, our science curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and develop the skills children need to explore and explain the world around them. We follow the Early Years Framework for coverage of ‘The Natural World’ in EYFS and the National Curriculum for Science in Key Stage 1, ensuring full coverage of statutory content and progression in both scientific knowledge and enquiry.

What We Teach

Our Science curriculum covers:

Our curriculum provides a broad and balanced science education across biology and chemistry. Children learn to:

  • Understand key scientific concepts and processes.
  • Use scientific vocabulary confidently.
  • Explore the natural and physical world through observation, questioning, and investigation.

We ensure that pupils build secure knowledge over time, revisiting and deepening their understanding as they progress through the school.

How We Teach

Science is taught weekly through engaging, practical lessons that:

  • Embed ‘working scientifically’ skills such as planning, asking questions, investigating and making conclusions.
  • Make meaningful links with other subjects including maths, literacy, computing, and outdoor learning.
  • Use a sequenced curriculum that builds on prior learning and encourages curiosity.
  • Encouraging children to take part in Science outside of the curriculum, including after school clubs and British Science Week.

We enrich learning through hands-on investigations, outdoor experiences, and opportunities to explore real-world science.

What Children Learn

Children develop a strong foundation in scientific thinking and enquiry. They learn to:

  • Ask scientific questions and learn ways to test their ideas.
  • Interpret findings and make simple conclusions.
  • Make connections across the curriculum, including maths and outdoor learning.

This helps us ensure that all pupils are making progress and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
