Personal, Social & Health Education
At Cranmore, want to inspire in our pupils a strong sense of self, belonging and emotional wellbeing that will support them throughout their lives. Our PSHE curriculum, based on the Jigsaw scheme of work, is carefully planned to help children understand themselves, build positive relationships and develop the skills they need to navigate the world around them.
What We Teach
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children begin to develop their awareness of feelings, relationships and their own identity through stories, play, and discussions about their experiences. As pupils move through Key Stage 1, they build on this foundation by exploring themes such as friendships, family, belonging, health and wellbeing, and understanding how their actions affect themselves and others.
We want our pupils to develop a secure understanding of their emotions, relationships and their place in the world. Through PSHE, pupils gain knowledge and skills that help them to stay safe, make positive choices and develop resilience. They also begin to understand similarities and differences between people, fostering respect and empathy for others.
Our aim is for our pupils to develop key personal, social and emotional skills, including:
- Recognising and managing their feelings.
- Building positive relationships and friendships.
- Developing empathy and respect for others.
- Understanding how to keep themselves healthy and safe.
- Beginning to understand their role within their community and the wider world.
How We Teach
Jigsaw is taught through structured weekly lessons, discussion, and reflection, helping children develop emotional and social skills in a safe, supportive environment.
Through high-quality teaching using the Jigsaw approach, we develop the following essential characteristics in our pupils:
- A secure understanding of their own emotions and how to manage them.
- The ability to form positive, respectful relationships with others.
- A developing vocabulary to talk about feelings, relationships and wellbeing.
- The confidence to share their thoughts, ask questions and express themselves appropriately.
- A growing sense of responsibility and awareness of how their behaviour impacts others.
- An appreciation of diversity and an understanding of their own identity and that of others
Our intention is for pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to lead healthy, happy and fulfilling lives. Our PSHE curriculum aligns with the aims of the Jigsaw programme and supports pupils in building a strong foundation for their future wellbeing and personal development.
How We Assess
The Jigsaw PSHE Curriculum is assessed through ongoing teacher observation and pupil reflection, rather than formal tests.
Teachers assess pupils by:
- Observing participation, behaviour, and social skills in lessons
- Using learning intentions and success criteria to judge progress
- Encouraging pupils to self-reflect on their learning
What does PSHE stand for?
PSHE stands for personal, social, health and economic. That’s why we tend to say ‘PSHE education’ a lot instead of always abbreviating it to ‘PSHE’. The ‘E’ in PSHE covers economic wellbeing and careers – vital parts of the subject that mustn’t be ignored.
We teach PSHE through a scheme called JIGSAW - To find out more Click here
Do schools have to teach it?
Most of PSHE education became statutory in September 2020 under the Children and Social Work Act.
The Act introduced compulsory Relationships Education in all primary schools and compulsory Relationships and Sex Education in all secondary schools. Health Education (both mental and physical) became statutory from key stages 1 to 4. This brought all schools more in line with independent schools who were already required to teach all of PSHE education.
